Eight E-mail Mistakes That Make You Look Bad
By Kim Komando
Reprinted with permission from Microsoft Small Business Center

I get an awful lot of e-mail. Sometimes, people are looking for help with their computers. Some of it is fan mail.

Other folks are mad about something I said or wrote. Add to this the barrage of press releases and an occasional blast from the past when a former classmate or ex-boss drops me a note.

After facing this tidal wave of electronic words for several years, as well as owning my own business, I've developed some strong opinions about e-mail and correspondents.

Here are eight easily avoidable mistakes you should know about to keep your image and inbox in tip-top shape.

Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference

This year's Microsoft Partner Conference took place in Denver. The driving key to the event was the continued push to modernize the office worker's technology, led by a strong emphasis on Windows Vista and Office System 2007. The adoption rates around these products are staggering. More than 40 million Vista licenses have shipped in the first 6 months, far surpassing the same time frame for Windows XP – the last major desktop upgrade. Office SharePoint (a key member of the Office Server System) is the fastest growing server product in the history of Microsoft. Clearly the momentum is there, and the time is now to get on the bandwagon.

Equally important to the past is of course the future. Microsoft finally announced launch dates for the next major wave of products. February 27th, 2008 will mark the launch date of Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio 2008. This will mark the single biggest launch date in the history of Microsoft and will in many ways revolutionize the corporate network. The next generations of Microsoft's network operating system and database platform are tremendous leaps forward in delivering the functionality, reliability, and scalability companies need today – and they are being delivered at incredibly competitive prices.

Microsoft also spent a great deal of time talking about their vision for Software + Services moving forward. This is a trend that has been gaining momentum throughout the industry. Microsoft has started (and is planning to expand) delivering software to solution providers and clients as a service. This subscription model allows clients to focus on what they do best (run their business), and let's them rest easy knowing they have the latest and greatest software platforms, constantly being monitored and supported. This trend goes hand-in-hand with the Fusion Support services CHIPS has been perfecting and delivering to our clients for years. Details of the first major offering in this space were discussed as well. Microsoft CRM Live – a hosted version of the Microsoft CRM platform, which will be designed much the same way salesforce.com  is, at a very attractive price.

Microsoft's new web development technology was widely on display. Microsoft Silverlight will allow application developers to create a wealth of new applications with rich functionality that was never available before. The things you can do and the applications you can deliver over the web with Silverlight will boggle the mind. Definitely keep an eye on what emerges there.

The Microsoft Surface was also on display at the show. While business uses are still somewhat limited, Microsoft's new desktop display system had everyone at the show buzzing. The community, e-commerce and collaboration possibilities are limitless. For now, it's a big toy, but rest assured you will start to see the Surface in your everyday life sooner than later.

As more of these products and solutions hit the mainstream, Network Management Group, Inc. will make sure to keep our clients up to date, and make sure we are delivering the right types of solutions on the right types of platforms.
